BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK MAY 24-25

Memorial Day we tour the park and
nearby towns.

Our day started out climbing the Big Mountain
area called the Chisos Basin
 Really, Really
This is snake, lizard and scorpion country
Yup-they're here

On our way to the Ghost town of Terlingua
97 degrees here this afternoon
Cinnabar was mined here from the early  1900's to
the mid 1940's. Cinnabar when heated gives off a
vapor when condensed, it  produces mercury.
The town was deserted until the 70's, when a
number of free thinkers and artists
started to repopulate the town. Population 58.
In 1969, Terlingua hosted the first annual
Chili Cook Off, bringing  in 10,000 "Chiliheads"
each year.
My burning question -why does anyone want to live out here?
 Terlingua Trading Post
 Old Hotel
 Church circa 1939

 Mercury mine
 Continued to Lajitas
An oasis in the desert
 Pond on the golf course
 Chapel
 Hotel
 Golf Resort in the Desert

 Heading back to the Park

Hot Springs in Big Bend Park
Had to use 4 wheel drive here
Back in the 30's, The Hot Springs was a resort
for those seeking the healing powers of the springs
 Old Trading Post
TOO hot to walk the mile to the springs
Heading out on this narrow road

Closed - no entry to Mexico
That didn't stop the three Amigos

And there they go, wading across the Rio Grande
 Rio Grande
 Carmen de Boquillas, Mexico
 Roadrunner--hard to photograph--so fast
 Got him-boy they run fast
View from our campsite at dusk
