MONO LAKE AND BODIE JUNE 9

  MONO LAKE
It is a large, shallow saline soda lake formed
at least 760,000 years ago.
The lack of an outlet causes high levels
of salts to accumulate in the lake.  These
salts make the lake water alkaline.

Large island in the middle of the lake

 Tufas
formed when underwater springs mix with
the chemicals in the lake.

By the 1940's, most of the people left.
Faced with vandalism, the family that owned
most of the land hired caretakers to protect the town.
In 1961, Bodie was designated a National
Historic Landmark and became a State Park in 1962.
Bodie is an authentic Wild West ghost town.
